How We Got Started

The Peninsula Committee was founded in 1952 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1962. The all-volunteer organization drew its members from the Palos Verdes Peninsula and surrounding cities, and quickly grew into a vital force supporting the LA Phil.

Dorothy Chandler, named executive vice president of the Southern California Symphony Association in 1951, was tasked with reopening the Hollywood Bowl, which had closed the previous year because of financial difficulties. She went on to spearhead massive efforts to construct the Music Center. The LA Phil Affiliates, including the Peninsula Committee, supported ticket sales and the fundraising efforts.

What We Do

We Enjoy and Support Music!

Fundraising

As one of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliate Committees, we are proud that our Peninsula Committee has been a major contributor over the years to support the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Annually, we create signature fundraising events meticulously curated to benefit both the LA Phil and local music programs. These events showcase exceptional performances by talented musicians from Southern California and are open to the public. Set in scenic venues that align with the thematic essence of the occasion, these fundraisers are a platform for fostering community engagement.

Furthermore, we organize cocktail events featuring accomplished Los Angeles Philharmonic musicians to raise funds specifically for the LA Phil and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA).

Supporting Music in our Community

PCLAP is committed to advancing the development of local music programs, both within our community and in support of the LA Phil's Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA).

A portion of our fundraising proceeds support student musicians within our community, facilitating the acquisition of instruments and essential supplies for local schools. Each Spring we proudly organize "Music in the Garden," an event that affords student musicians and choral groups the platform to showcase their talents to the community.

Working with Youth at LA Phil

At Walt Disney Concert Hall we volunteer at Symphonies For Schools. LA Phil buses over 15,000 elementary and high school students from all over Southern California to listen to music.

We assist at Symphonies for Youth on Saturdays where children of all ages are invited to attend music programs designed especially for them.

During Sunday LA Soundscapes at The Ford Theater members assist with pre-concert activities.

Members also support the Learning Team with events and activities for the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA).

Music Outreach

In tandem with our commitment to bolstering local school music programs, our organization provides subsidized transportation for adults who face barriers to attending LA Phil performances. Financial assistance for the program is graciously provided by the Honorable Janice Hahn, Los Angeles County Supervisor, Fourth District.

Complementing this effort are four annual music salons, offering intimate performances by distinguished musicians, accompanied by opportunities for attendees to engage with the artists personally. Additionally, our Music Discovery Program spotlights renowned artists, contributing to a rich cultural experience for our patrons.
